Research Training Opportunites

Are you an otolaryngologist looking to advance your research career? Consider applying to attend the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) Lessons for Success conference. For over a decade, ASHA has been offering this highly successful grant-writing conference to early-career researchers in communication sciences and disorders. In an effort to accelerate interdisciplinary collaboration, ASHA’s Lessons for Success includes slots specifically dedicated to otolaryngologists.

Lessons for Success will take place April 24-26, 2017 at the ASHA National Office in Rockville, Maryland. Applications are due January 10, 2017.

What is Lessons for Success? Lessons for Success is a program that aims to prepare researchers to compete successfully for federal research funding though the most appropriate mechanism for their career stage. The conference includes lectures, mock reviews, roundtable discussions, and small-group sessions focused on grant-writing skills and professional competencies needed to succeed in a research career.

Why should I attend? According to recent follow-up surveys, prior participants are achieving success. Within two years of attending Lessons for Success, 60% had successfully secured research funding. Of those who had applied for NIDCD funding, 45% were successful. Five years after attending, 96% continued to hold an academic or other research position.

How do I apply? To be eligible, you must be a final year resident, post-residency fellow, candidacy-level MD/PhD student, or junior-level faculty (assistant professor) who has applied for extramural research funding (success obtaining prior funding is preferred but not required).

How much will it cost? There is no conference registration fee. Funds are provided for travel, lodging, and meals in accordance with ASHA policy.

The program is supported by a U13 grant from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) and is co-sponsored by ASHA and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation.
