Members of the AAO-HNS have an array of opportunities to impact the specialty by getting involved with the Academy’s initiatives. These opportunities are not only member benefits, but they also provide a valuable service to the specialty and allow you to connect with others in the field. One way to expand your network is by engaging with the Academy’s sections: Section for Residents and Fellows-in-Training (SRF), Women in Otolaryngology (WIO), and the Young Physicians Section (YPS).

International Corresponding Societies
Board of Governors (BOG)
The BOG was established in 1982 as a grassroots member network within the AAO-HNS. The BOG is made up of local, state, regional, and national otolaryngology-head and neck surgery societies from around the United States and Canada, and serves as an important avenue of communication with the Board of Directors to help improve the programs and policies of the AAO-HNS/F.
International Programs
International outreach, worldwide partnerships, and the exchange of information and education are important aims of the Academy and its Foundation.
Become a Student Mentor
The AAO-HNS mentorship program, mENTor, connects medical student members to otolaryngologists across the country who are eager to share their guidance, advice, and personal experiences about the path to residency and practice as well as their day-to-day experiences of the specialty. Through one-on-one interactions, students will have an opportunity to learn directly from experienced physicians in a welcoming, confidential environment.

Humanitarian Efforts
Humanitarian work can be a refreshing change from the frustrations of clinical practice and can be intensely rewarding. It can help to remind us of our motivation for choosing medicine as our life’s work. Working in under-served areas and in countries with limited resources also encourages creative problem-solving and helps to address our own issues of cost-effectiveness.
Other Ways to Get Involved
The American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery offers a variety of opportunities for members to share their expertise by authoring, reviewing, and presenting content that influences the quality of patient care.
In today’s regulatory and legislative climate, it’s vital for U.S. otolaryngologists to use their clinical expertise to advocate on behalf of the specialty. The AAO-HNS provides numerous opportunities for members to influence federal and state healthcare policies, communicate with elected officials, and advocate for patients. Participation in our Academy has given me the great opportunity to know and connect with other members who are not in my subspecialty. Over the years I have continued to enjoy the social and professional interactions with other members through meeting participation, committee work, and simply staying connected across our respective institutions to maximize how we serve our patients and enhance education.
