Research with Reg-ent
Launched in 2016, Reg-ent is the first, and largest, national otolaryngology-specific clinical data registry. Participating members and their practices across the United States have shared structured and unstructured EHR data as well as ancillary data (audiograms, Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs), radiology reports, and laboratory reports). Collecting and maintaining this data set maintains our ability to study and define optimal clinical quality for the specialty, which will be critical for continued reimbursement advocacy efforts. The comprehensiveness of the data repository also allows for robust, up to date data for research purposes.

As more of the data completes the curation process, Reg-ent members will be able to participate in revenue generating projects as well as clinical trial research opportunities. AAO-HNS committees will also be able to request Reg-ent data for their projects.
Reg-ent’s analytics partner, OM1, will offer a ‘menu’ of analytic support for those organizations that have limited data processing capabilities (i.e., Python, SQL, etc.). Reg-ent participants will have the option to request support. The Reg-ent de-identified data set can be supplemented with other data sets outside of Reg-ent data, for example claims data. Requests for additional support or data should be established during the initial phases to determine costs associated with the supplemental services.
Research Requests
Reg-ent research requests will be reviewed and prioritized by the Reg-ent Research Advisory Group (RRAG). We continue to work diligently towards data curation and will announce when Reg-ent will begin accepting research requests. An ample notification period will allow time for researchers to complete and submit applications for potential research projects.
Research Proposals
Research proposals submitted on a rolling basis will be reviewed and prioritized by the RRAG. The RRAG’s charge is to promote the highest quality internal, non-commercial Reg-ent-associated research to advance the field of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery and help define quality care within the specialty. The RRAG will review and prioritize study proposals. The following criteria will aid in the prioritization:
- Identified AAO-HNS/F knowledge gaps as put forth by the Reg-ent Executive Committee (REC), Executive Committee (EC)/Board of Directors (BOD), Centralized Otolaryngology Research Efforts (CORE), and Guidelines Task Force (GTF).
- The proposal score will evaluate the feasibility and derive a rating based on the following areas:
- Significance/Clinical Impact
- AAO-HNS/F Knowledge gap
- Specialty needs as determined by the BOD
- Achievability of protocol
- Methodology
- Timeline
- Principal Investigator (PI)/Collaborators research experience
- History of AAO-HNSF committee involvement and support
