Faces Behind the Science (Day 1)

Faces Behind the Science (Day 1)

Together, this year’s Scientific Oral Presentations and Scientific Posters have brought over 1,000 presenters to Miami Beach to share their research with the global otolaryngology community over the next four days. The Academy is proud to showcase the latest ENT research, reflecting the vast breadth of the specialty. Our presenters have been hard at work for the last year or more on their research and many have traveled from around the world to share their findings and spark future projects.

“Come to be inspired!” said Amanda Joy Bastien, MD, who will be presenting multiple Scientific Oral Presentations and a Poster during the Meet the Scientific Poster Authors Showcase on Monday. “These presenters want to engage you, innovate patient care, and better our field. Showing up and supporting these presenters is powerful, so let’s also motivate them to continue their work and continue to share their ideas and findings with the greater ENT community,” said Dr. Bastien.

“Beyond demonstrating research that is ongoing across the globe, I think Scientific Oral and Poster Presentations are a good source for stimulating new ideas for future research. It helps show some of the deficits we have in the literature regarding our specialty, hopefully inspiring new projects to fill these gaps in our knowledge,” said presenter Taylor D. Leavitt, MD. Dr. Leavitt is presenting “Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Treatment Outcomes of Monopolar Cautery vs BiZact Total Tonsillectomy in Children” during Scientific Oral Presentations 1 – Pediatric Otolaryngology tomorrow at 9:30 am ET.

Many of the Scientific Oral Presentations and Posters are presented by early-career physicians and medical students, which makes attending a great opportunity to connect with attendees at all stages of their careers. Dana Eitan, a fourth-year medical student, is presenting two Posters. She is excited to connect with both peers and mentors through her presentations and other events.

“Since my second year of medical school, I’ve enjoyed attending the Scientific Oral Presentations and Posters at these meetings. As lifelong learners, we must continue to embrace new information to advance our field,” said Ms. Eitan.

New technology is a popular topic in the research being presented. “Getting ready for all of this has been an all-out sprint over the past few weeks!” said Anand K. Devaiah, MD, who will be presenting “A Novel Artificial Intelligence Model for Optimizing Treatment of Salivary Gland Malignancies” with his colleagues during the Best of Scientific Oral Presentations tomorrow at 1:00 pm ET.

“With this [AI model] built, it allows us to expand into other types of diseases and analytics.  We are very excited to present this to the AAO-HNS membership, and to give attendees a chance to try out the model online running in the cloud,” said Dr. Devaiah.

Attendees looking to understand how new technologies are transforming the specialty and patient care should browse the full list of Scientific Oral Presentations and Posters on the app when planning their day. For those specifically interested in artificial intelligence, there is a Special Focus track of dedicated sessions, including Scientific Oral Presentations.
